In 2015, while exploring Central Java, we discovered a 250-year-old traditional Joglo house — an architectural gem made of teak with a stunning carved “tumpang sari” ceiling. It was love at first sight. We knew we had to bring this rare find to Bali.
By 2017, with the help of skilled local craftsmen, we began the labour of love of reconstructing the Joglo and a smaller teak Gladak house we had uncovered elsewhere. Using a mix of recycled teak from Java and ulin (ironwood) from Kalimantan, we carefully restored these structures, preserving their heritage while incorporating our own personal touch. The handmade cement tiles, crafted with traditional Javanese techniques, is just one example of the care and detail that went into this project.
